In 1976 we had a very ecstatic time in Vrindavan. We were doing guru puja, with Sudama Maharaj leading the worship. He had a beautiful kirtan voice and he had a lot of deep love for Srila Prabhupada. I was about ten feet away from Srila Prabhupada, and one of my God-brothers, Panchatattva das, who was standing next to me, also recollects this pastime. It’s very vivid.

Sudama was leading the kirtan, and of course everyone was just point-on, fixed on Srila Prabhupada. We started out, “Sri guru, carana padma …” and then gradually built up. I was watching Srila Prabhupada playing the kartals, and when Sudama got to “ebe jasa ghusuk tribhuvana …” Prabhupada’s hands started to flail almost uncontrollably. Then Prabhupada dropped his head to his chest and went into a trance.

A wave of ecstasy flowed over the devotees. Everyone almost simultaneously lifted off the ground with our hairs standing on end. Our bodies trembled and people were crying. After maybe twenty or thirty seconds Prabhupada picked up his kartals and he was in perfect beat. He just didn’t miss a beat.

There were five hundred devotees, from the Gaur-Nitai deities all the way over to Radha-Shyamasundar, and they were leaping in unison. It was just an amazing experience.

After the kirtan, Prabhupada got up and left the vyasasana and Panchatattva said, “Did you see that?” I said, “Yeah, I saw that!” It was a moment of seeing Prabhupada feeling ecstatic symptoms that we’re always anxious to achieve in chanting the Holy Name.
