During the later years in Los Angeles I had the privilege of cleaning Srila Prabhupada’s bathroom. I used to get the nectar of the eucalyptus twigs he had used as toothbrushes and I used to collect the bathtub ring of mustard seed oil, a delicacy which I’d greedily take and distribute, along with any other little things left around in the bathroom.

One day it started to rain, and Srila Prabhupada came back early from his morning walk. I was blissfully cleaning and singing, absorbed in my service.

Everybody else had gone downstairs but I was still finishing the floor of his bathroom when I realized that Prabhupada was vigorously walking up the stairs, so I squeezed myself into a corner and put my head down.

Prabhupada was with an Indian gentleman who said something about the sunrise being beautiful and Prabhupada said, “Yes, it is somewhat beautiful, but it is Krishna’s sunrise and Krishna is so beautiful. Krishna is so beautiful!”

Then Prabhupada stopped walking and said, “Even one tiny ray emanating from the tips of Krishna’s toenails is a million times more effulgent and beautiful than anything in this world.”

Prabhupada was full of that intense vision. He said to the man, “You don’t know?” The man didn’t say anything. Prabhupada turned to me—he had seen me all along—and said, “Can you see?”

I said, “No, Srila Prabhupada, I can’t see.” Then Prabhupada looked at me in a beautiful, deep way and said, “I want you to see.” That was very special for me.
